KEY POINTS

Last week, 500 shillings would give you 22.73 units worth of KPL tokens from Kenya Power. This week (Thursday, April 6, 2023,) the same 500 shillings will only manage to give you 15 units worth of tokens from Kenya Power.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Kenya Power presented to EPRA the request to review tariffs upwards and sustain them in place for the next three years from April 1, 2023. With the electricity tariffs up by 117 percent, Kenyans simply had to pay through the nose for tokens.

There have been loud screams on the streets, screams from millions of poor Kenyans, screams of having to dig deeper into their pockets to purchase tokens from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), tokens that don’t even last.

President William Ruto, in one of his “presidential” speeches, assured all Kenyans, that there shall be no increase whatsoever in the cost of power. He said it with a straight face, addressing the whole nation, and giving hope to millions who were being robbed through tokens.

But it seems what the President meant was the cost of power was going to triple. It is not him, it is we who misquoted him to fit what we wanted to hear. It is like he was saying, “Uhuru Kenyatta doubled the cost of power, I will triple it and there is nothing you will do.”

In January this year, Kenyans knew they were going to be on their own when it emerged that the cost of purchase of tokens was likely to go up by at least 117 percent if Kenya Power and Lighting Company requests that was before the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) was to be accepted.

In October last year, Kenya Power presented to EPRA the request to review tariffs upwards and sustain them in place for the next three years from April 1, 2023. With the electricity tariffs up by 117 percent, Kenyans simply had to pay through the nose for tokens.

What the government of Hustlers is failing to understand is that when the power of electricity goes up, everything down the value chain, including the price of basic commodities goes up, hence lowering the cost of living will always remain a dream.
