Teachers To Get Salary Increment As TSC Pushes For Approval Of Ksh 54 Billion

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, is set to pay its teachers who are on permanent and pensionable terms their annual salary increments starting July 2023.
Teachers, including those in lower grades, will continue to receive their annual salary increases when the TSC gets the 54 billion shillings it is seeking from Treasury.
TSC promotions and salary increments are essential, especially for teachers working as school administrators in Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL) and difficult-to-staff areas.

According to Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia, although trade unions signed the 2021-2025 CBA, it didn’t contain any monetary value, a move that would now be the subject of a review.
“The commission negotiated a non-monetary 2021-2025 CBA with the teacher unions pursuant to the advisory from the Salaries Review Commission. It was agreed that the CBA be reviewed mid-term if the economic situation would improve in the country,” Dr. Macharia told members of the National Assembly Education and Research Committee chaired by Julius Melly.
“The Commission would wish to review the 2021-2025 CBA, more specifically the salary component to motivate teachers under the employment of the Commission.” She added.
“Accordingly, we request this Committee to support the Commission get Sh14 billion per year for four years to cater for the same.”
According to the CBA 2021-2025 teachers in the lowest job group, B5 will move gradually till they reach their maximum salary point of 27,195 shillings.
The same applies to teachers in other job groups. A teacher in job group C1, also known as Primary Teacher I, for example, currently earns a basic salary of 30,405 shillings.
This teacher has not yet reached the maximum salary point of Sh. 33,994, which he will achieve through annual salary increments based on the number of notches he has earned. Teachers used to receive an annual wage increase based on the month they were absorbed into the TSC payroll.
TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia also announced plans to recruit 20,000 new teachers in the next financial year to address the shortage of staff mainly at the Junior Secondary School level. She urged Parliament to allocate the Commission Sh3.8 billion for recruitment in the next budget to be presented in June.
The announcement comes after TSC recruited 30,000 teachers the majority of them who were posted in Junior Secondary Schools with each institution receiving at least one member of staff.
