KEY POINTS
Grade 3 pupils will be assessed on integrated learning between June 5 and August 11 while they will write their Mathematics and English tests on October 2 and have their scores submitted by October 26.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) announced that the dates for the administration of Competency-Based Assessments (CBA) for Grades 3, 4, 5, and 7 will be in October 2023.
KNEC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Njengere revealed that the assessment tools had already been posted on the CBA portal.
Grade 3 pupils will be assessed on integrated learning between June 5 and August 11 while they will write their Mathematics and English tests on October 2 and have their scores submitted by October 26.
“The assessment tools will be provided in two formats: PDF, and digital. Schools will score and upload the assessment outcomes of all learners on the CBA portal,” Njengere wrote.

The assessment tools will be made available to students in grades 4 and 5 beginning on July 10, and the scores are due to be uploaded no later than August 11. Between October 2 and 26, learners in these grades will take the Special Needs Education (SNE) Foundation level assessment and 11 separate written subject exams.
Teachers will assess students during performance-based tasks and score them using the provided guidelines. Color images should be printed in color and uploaded to the digital platforms available in schools if there are assessment tools that need their use.
From July 3 through August 11, grade 7 learners will be assessed on their practical, projects, and performance tasks. This includes various subjects such as performing arts, visual arts, English, Home Science, Integrated Science, Health Education, Physical Education and Sports, Islamic Religious Education, and Hindu Religious Education.
The Grade 7 written assessment tools for Math, English, Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, and Integrated Science will be made available by the Council on October 2. The scores for these written tests should be submitted by October 23, 2023.

Since the implementation of the competency-based curriculum, tests have been an element of formative assessments in the educational system. The assessment tools are uploaded by the council for schools to download and use with the students.
In an effort to reduce printing expenses, KNEC has now provided schools with two choices for accessing the assessment tools. The assessment tools will be accessible on the web in both PDF and digital versions.
The teachers have up to August 11, 2023, to upload the scores on the KNEC portal. The learners will undertake the written assessments for mathematics and English from October 2 to October 26, 2023.
