Kenya Power Has Been Inflating Power Bills By Up To 20%

Can you imagine paying up to 20 percent more for the electricity you did not use? Can you imagine your power being disconnected for non-paid bills only to turn out you paid but you are being disconnected for not paying for what you did not use? Ironic. Right?

Well, as MacKenzie said, “Kitawaramba!” and indeed, Kinaturamba. The Auditor-General of the Republic of Kenya, Nancy Gathungu has revealed that Kenya Power has been inflating power bills by up to 20 percent with millions paying for what they did not use.

Speaking before a parliamentary committee, Nancy Gathungu said a forensic review of generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity found bills do not match actual consumption while extra charges loaded on the consumers by the utility are not traceable in the billing system.

More shockingly, out of 96 generation plants supplying power to Kenya Power, only 38 had check meters. At the same time, all 38 meters were off-the-grid power stations, raising more questions as to who are the real owners of these 38 suppliers.

In recent months, Kenyans have been paying through the nose for their power bills. Kenya Power is said to have increased the cost of power by more than 30 percent. Plans are underway to further increase the cost of electricity by 63 percent.
