Kenyans Mark The Taxpayer’s Day In Mombasa

This year’s Taxpayer Day is happening in Mombasa with President William Ruto expected to highlight the event. The event is set to see the Head of State, through the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) recognize and celebrate notable and committed taxpayers in Kenya.

According to the Kenya Revenue Authority, the day serves an important significance in acknowledging the role taxpayers play in the growth of the country. “Taxpayers are the life of a nation. They are the reason the systems run,” said the agency.

Ahead of the day, KRA has been running a Tax Amnesty program, on interest and penalties for tax debts incurred for periods up to December 31, 2022. The tax amnesty will run from September 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, for businesses and individuals.

The Tax Amnesty has come as a huge relief for millions of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the country that were on the brink of shutting down due to unpaid taxes. Now they have an opportunity to negotiate terms with KRA and pay in smaller amounts.

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has so far collected 3.4 Billion shillings from the ongoing tax amnesty program. Chief Manager Domestic Taxes Department Ms Caroline Rotich said that more than 17,000 taxpayers have so far applied for tax amnesty and are expected to remit 10.5 billion shillings.

The Taxpayers Day is expected to highlight the need for the Tax Amnesty and why many businesses should apply anf benefit from it.

The 2023 Taxpayers’ Day in Kenya is an important occasion that highlights the significant role of taxpayers in the nation’s development. It’s not just a celebration but a statement of appreciation for those who fulfill their civic duty by contributing to the country’s financial health.
