Kenyans have started traveling upcountry for the Christmas festivities. The streets of Nairobi have started being empty and the traffic jams that are often the order of the day have started fading. As it is the norm, bus fares have doubled from Nairobi to other places.

Those traveling from Nairobi to Bungoma are paying between 2,000 and 2,500 shillings while those from the City on the Sun to Kakamega are paying 2,200 shillings. Nairobi to Kisii is going from 2,500 and 3,000 shillings with the cost set to rise further.

Nairobi to Kisumu is 2,500 shillings while those from Nairobi to Nakuru are paying 1,000 shillings. Mombasa to Nairobi is now from 2,500 shillings while from Mombasa to Nyanza it ranges from 3,000 shillings.

Those who had hoped to use the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) are not in luck. Despite the prices being affordable with the SGR, all the trains are fully booked for the whole season to around January 5.

Those who are targeting to fly will also have to dig deeper. Most flights are full and those available from Mombasa to Nairobi are expensive. Jambojet was charging at least 14,000 shillings for a flight from Mombasa to Nairobi on Monday evening.

The hike in bus fares during this season is a normal thing as public service vehicle owners target to cash in as the demand is always higher than at any point in a year. The current hike comes against the dropping of fuel prices by 5 shillings.

Despite the high cost of living that has hit millions of Kenyan households, Kenyans seem to have resolved to use this Christmas to at least unwind even if 2024 is not guaranteed with reprieve.
