Ignore Your Employees And Their Mental Health At Your Peril

KEY POINTS
Employers should adopt a proactive approach to mental health by implementing strategies that promote open communication and support.
In the recent past, the headlines of Nairobi newspapers told somber stories of individuals who, on the surface, seemed to have made it in life. A successful doctor, a dedicated government employee, an audit firm manager, and an embassy official – all connected by the tragic death by suicide.
These incidents have cast a harsh light on the alarming state of mental health awareness and support in Kenya, especially at places of work.
The high cost of living and the poor state of mental healthcare in Kenya has created an environment where mental health concerns are frequently swept under the rug. The stigma surrounding mental illness, particularly the taboo for men to speak out about their problems, only exacerbates the issue.

Depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders are pervasive, affecting individuals from all walks of life. The recent cases highlight the urgent need for increased awareness of mental health issues and the symptoms associated with them. It is crucial to recognize that no one is immune.
Beyond the humanitarian aspect of addressing mental health, there is a compelling economic case for prioritizing the well-being of employees. Depression and anxiety can lead to decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and elevated healthcare costs. Substance abuse disorders can result in addiction, chronic health problems, and social isolation.
Workplace mental wellness is not just a luxury but a necessity. Numerous studies have shown that comprehensive mental health and employee wellness benefits can significantly increase productivity, enhance performance, and boost retention. By investing in mental well-being, employers not only create a healthier work environment but also mitigate the costs associated with losing valuable talent.
Employers should adopt a proactive approach to mental health by implementing strategies that promote open communication and support. Breaking the taboo surrounding mental illness, particularly encouraging men to speak out about their struggles, is a critical first step. Workplace mental wellness not only leads to healthier employees but also fosters innovation and productivity.
A key component of this strategy is the implementation of employee assistance programs (EAPs) that provide confidential counseling services. These programs, combined with flexible work arrangements, wellness initiatives, and leadership training, create a culture that values mental health.
Employers must invest in a robust communications strategy to ensure that employees are aware of available mental wellness resources. In doing so, they send a powerful message that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but an essential step towards well-being.
Any effort, o matter how small, to improve employee mental wellness can have a profound impact on satisfaction and workplace culture. The recent tragedies in Nairobi should serve as a wake-up call for employers to prioritize the mental well-being of their workforce. Ignore your employees and their mental well-being at your peril—the cost is too high, both personally and professionally.
