Let Me Tell You Why We MUST #RejectFinanceBill2024

BY Steve Biko Wafula · June 24, 2024 02:06 pm

In the shadow of grandiose government declarations and amidst the luxurious trappings of power, Kenya’s youth have mobilized, taking to the streets in a bold demonstration against the Finance Bill 2024. The hashtag #RejectFinanceBill2024 has become a rallying cry, emblematic of a deeper, more visceral discontent that runs through the veins of a generation tired of corruption, injustice, and governmental excess.

A new wave of democracy is being forged by Kenya’s youth, whose protests against the Finance Bill 2024 have become a clarion call for accountability and justice. These young activists, disillusioned by the opulence and corruption of their leaders, are redefining what it means to be a democratic society.

They demand not just the end of governmental excess and mismanagement but a fundamental transformation that ensures their voices are not just heard but heeded. This movement transcends the specifics of any single bill; it is a powerful assertion that true democracy must reflect the will and welfare of its people. As the protests swell, the government faces a stark ultimatum: embrace meaningful reform or risk being swept away by a generation that will no longer tolerate a democracy in name only.

  1. The Great Disillusionment

Youth across the nation are disillusioned by the pervasive lies and broken promises of their leaders. The duplicity is embodied in the contrasting images of President Ruto’s call for austerity against the backdrop of his extravagant lifestyle. The disconnect between rhetoric and reality is stark, and the young populace is no longer willing to accept it.

  1. Arrogance and Disconnect

The arrogance of the ruling elite, flaunting wealth that starkly contrasts with the economic realities of the average Kenyan, is a significant driver of the protests. A belt costing KES 428,000 and watches worth millions are not mere symbols of luxury but of a leadership perceived as out of touch with its people’s struggles.

  1. The Scourge of Corruption

Corruption, deeply entrenched and seemingly insurmountable, has eroded public trust. The youth, bearing the brunt of systemic theft, are demanding accountability. They are no longer willing to be silent victims of an elite that siphons national wealth for personal gain.

  1. Incompetence in Governance

Beyond corruption, the sheer incompetence in governance has fueled the protests. From mishandled public funds to inefficient public services, the youth are frustrated with a government that seems incapable of addressing the basic needs of its citizens.

  1. Justice for the Marginalized

Calls for justice for victims of past violence, such as those from the 2007 post-election crisis, resonate deeply. The demonstrators demand closure and accountability, seeking to end the cycle of impunity that has plagued Kenya’s political landscape.

  1. Healthcare Crisis: Rejecting SHIF

The rejection of the State Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is another critical aspect of the protests. The youth view the SHIF as yet another poorly planned and implemented initiative that fails to address the fundamental issues plaguing Kenya’s healthcare system.

  1. Demanding Accountability for Evans and Rex

The cases of Evans and Rex, whose stories have become symbols of the broader fight for justice, highlight the systemic failures and human rights abuses that the youth are rallying against. They demand accountability and systemic change to prevent future injustices.

  1. Economic Wastage and Mismanagement

Government wastage and mismanagement of resources are central grievances. The demonstrators argue that funds squandered on luxury items for the elite could be better spent on essential services, such as healthcare and education, which are in dire need of support.

  1. The Education System in Crisis

University funding has become a flashpoint, with students demanding a more streamlined and equitable system. The protests underscore the urgent need for reforms to ensure that education is accessible and adequately funded.

  1. Opposition to Police Abductions

Reports of police abductions and other abuses have further inflamed public anger. The youth are demanding an end to such practices, calling for a law enforcement system that protects rather than persecutes.

  1. The Call for Ruto’s Resignation

At the heart of the protests is a call for President Ruto and his administration to step down. The demonstrators believe that new leadership is necessary to address the myriad issues facing the country and to chart a new course for Kenya’s future.

The demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024 are not just about a single piece of legislation. They are a manifestation of a broader struggle for justice, accountability, and good governance. The youth of Kenya are demanding a future where their voices are heard, their rights are respected, and their leaders are held to account. The time for talking is over; the youth have taken to the streets, and they will not be silenced until their demands are met.
