Pay First, Or Your Patient Will Die, We Don’t Care – St Francis Community Hospital

BY Juma · October 6, 2024 12:10 pm

I have talked about St. Francis Community Hospital, located in Kasarani, Nairobi. I will not get tired of talking about it, maybe my ranting will save a life. I will dedicate the next three months to tell you this; DO NOT TAKE YOUR PATIENT TO ST. FRANCIS COMMUNITY HOSPITAL, KASARANI.

That hospital is a death trap run by bloodthirsty human beings who do not value human life. To them, your health is transactional, and if you do not have money, either die as they watch or get the hell out of their facility. Sad that the facility is run by a Catholic Church.

Saturday 29, September 2024, we arrived at St Francis Community Hospital (Kasarani) in an ambulance. It was about 10 pm. The patient had had a fatal motorbike accident and had passed out. Being an emergency, one would expect medics to jump on their feet.

It did not happen. They remained calm and seated. At the reception, we struggled to take the patient off the ambulance. It was a night of horror that I will never forget for the rest of my life on this earth.

“Hey! Help. She is dying. She just had an accident. Please give her the first aid!” I shouted, trying to save the person I loved.

“Hey. Usituharakishe. Hiyo si shida yetu. Tumeona wangapi. Tulia tukuelezee pesa, ulipe kwanza, kama hutaweza, akufie hapo ama uende na yeye,” a mean-looking guy, short and a bit fat, in a jacket, and who claimed to be in charge of the facility, told me.

That was one of the coldest statements I have ever heard. I lost hope in humanity and I lost hope in ever getting help from the very people who are supposed to preserve and save lives.

I rushed to the cashier’s office to pay. There were not many people but the lady at the counter looked half-asleep. I paid Ksh 2,000 for the admission, Ksh 8,430 for a CT Scan, and some more Ksh 1,600 for something I cannot remember.

That was when they showed some reluctance to attend to my patient, hours after we arrived at the facility.

More horror still waited.
