Ndiritu Muriithi Sworn In As KRA Chairperson

Ndiritu Muriithi, the former Governor of Laikipia County, has been sworn in as the new Chairperson of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) following an appointment by President William Ruto.

Ndiritu, an economist, is replacing Anthony Mwaura, who was moved by President Ruto. The swearing-in happened at the Supreme Court premises attended by officials from KRA and the Judiciary.

Muriithi is taking over the helm of KRA at a time when the Authority has been performing above targets in terms of revenue collection. For instance, KRA hit the one trillion mark after collecting Kshs 1.005 Trillion as of 30^th November 2024 reflecting an upward trajectory in revenue collection, compared to the previous financial year (2023/2024), when the Authority achieved the same milestone on the 7^th December 2023 with Kshs 1.009 Trillion.

Notably, revenue collected in the last 5 months (July – November 2024/25) amounting to Kshs 1,005.183 Billion reflects a growth of 4.3% compared to Kshs 963.746 Billion collected in the same period last financial year.

He also comes in at a time when KRA has declared war on corruption among staff, promising to make revenue collection seamless and friendly for Kenyans. In the first quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year (July-September), KRA issued a total of 84 verdicts sanctioning staff for various misconducts, compared to just 37 verdicts during the same period in FY 2023/2024. This represents a significant increase in disciplinary actions, underscoring the leadership’s firmer stance on corruption within the organization. Among these sanctions, Summary Dismissals rose sharply to 25 cases in Q1 of FY 2024/2025 from just 7 in the same period last year, reflecting KRA’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.

Additionally, the number of Termination of Services cases dropped from eight in Q1 of FY 2023/24 to three in Q1 of FY 2024/25, while the combined cases of Warning and Lifting of Interdiction decreased from seven to four, indicating a more focused approach towards dealing with misconduct.
