Informal Workers In Kwale Empowered Amid Unique Challenges

20X Entrepreneur, a leading force in Kenya’s economic empowerment landscape, is rolling out its transformative initiative, ‘Chanuka, Jipange na Opportunities’, in Kwale County. With the region facing significant socio-economic challenges, including looming layoffs in the titanium mining sector and a high poverty rate, the program aims to empower informal workers and artisans while leveraging opportunities from ongoing affordable housing projects.

Kwale, known for its scenic beaches and rich natural resources, faces critical economic hardships. Nearly 47% of the population lives below the poverty line, highlighting the need for targeted economic empowerment initiatives. The informal sector constitutes a significant part of Kwale’s economy, with an employment-to-population ratio of 63.7%, yet many workers lack the skills to transition beyond subsistence living. Adding to these challenges is the anticipated layoff of over 1,950 workers from Base Titanium’s operations by mid-2025, creating an urgent need for alternative employment opportunities.

Speaking during the event Eunice Maina, CEO 20X Entrepreneur, said that Kwale’s challenges are unique, but so are its opportunities. “Our program is designed to empower informal workers and artisans, connecting them with the expanding affordable housing initiatives and equipping them to seize new opportunities.”

“The ‘Chanuka, Jipange na Opportunities’ program, currently focused on Kwale after successful editions in Embu, Nakuru, and Machakos, is transforming lives through economic empowerment and collaboration. Practical training sessions on financial literacy, marketing strategies, and leveraging technology will equip informal sector workers with the skills to build sustainable businesses.” She added.

Over 250 attendees attended the event, with the key objective being connecting participants to construction value chains.

The program is also aligned with Kwale’s ongoing affordable housing initiatives, such as the Matuga Affordable Housing Project and the Diani White House Project, which collectively aim to deliver nearly 1,400 housing units. These projects present significant opportunities for local employment and economic growth.

Through partnerships with organizations such as Bingwa.ke and the Kenya Federation of Jua Kali Associations, the initiative ensures grassroots engagement and comprehensive reach. It also includes collaborations with financial institutions to provide access to affordable credit and insurance products tailored for informal workers. A comprehensive database of artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs will enhance market access and foster public-private sector collaboration, while soft skills training will inspire workers to think beyond subsistence living.

Looking ahead, 20X Entrepreneur invites partners from financial institutions, local businesses, and policymakers to collaborate in making Kwale a success story.
