The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has issued an important advisory to students seeking to increase their chances of securing admission into their preferred degree programs.

In a notice dated Wednesday, April 2, KUCCPS outlined a strategic approach for applicants, emphasizing the importance of considering past cut-off points when making their selections.

KUCCPS advised prospective university students to apply for degree programs at institutions where the previous cut-off points were lower than their cluster weight.

This approach, KUCCPS explained, would significantly boost their chances of admission. Cluster weight is a student’s computed performance based on the four key subjects required for a particular degree program, while a cut-off point represents the weighted cluster points of the last student admitted to a specific program during a previous admission cycle.

KUCCPS provided further clarification on the role of cut-off points in the selection process. The placement service highlighted that the cut-off points from the previous year serve as a benchmark to guide candidates in selecting degree courses they are more likely to be admitted into based on competition levels.

By comparing their own cluster weight, available on the KUCCPS portal, with the 2024 cut-off points, students can make more informed decisions regarding their course preferences.

To assist applicants in navigating the process, KUCCPS recommended utilizing the search tool on the “All Programmes” page of its website. This tool enables students to search for courses using specific keywords, such as Education, Agriculture, or Clothing, making it easier to locate the relevant programs and their respective cut-off points.

The placement service stressed that students must carefully review the minimum subject requirements for each program before proceeding with their applications. Applicants can only apply for courses where they meet the minimum academic qualifications.

Once candidates have identified their preferred courses, they must note down the corresponding program codes. KUCCPS advised applicants to enter these codes into the application system in order of priority, starting with their top choice.

The submission process requires applicants to input all selected program codes before clicking the “submit” button. Following submission, students must proceed with the payment of Ksh1,500 to complete their application process.

This latest update from KUCCPS comes just a week after the placement service officially opened its portal for university and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course applications.

The application window was opened on March 28, allowing 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates to apply for their desired courses. KUCCPS also extended this opportunity to candidates who sat for the KCSE exams between 2000 and 2024, particularly for TVET and Teacher Training College (TTC) courses.

In its announcement, KUCCPS confirmed that the application portal would remain open for a total of 21 days, with the deadline for submissions set for April 21.

The placement service urged all eligible candidates to take advantage of this window to secure placement in their preferred institutions and courses.

“The KUCCPS portal is open for Degree, TVET, and TTC applications. Target: 2024 KCSE for Degree courses and 2000-2024 KCSE for TVET and TTC courses,” the notice from KUCCPS read.

With the deadline approaching, students are encouraged to review their options carefully, ensure they meet all necessary requirements, and submit their applications in a timely manner.

KUCCPS remains committed to facilitating a smooth and transparent placement process, ensuring that all eligible candidates have the best possible chance of securing a spot in their desired programs.
