BY Getrude Mathayo · April 2, 2025 04:04 pm

In a bid to strengthen the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Assessment (CBA), the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced an extensive retooling program for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.

According to TSC, this initiative has been scheduled for April 2025, aims to enhance the capacity of teachers in various learning areas to effectively deliver the new curriculum.

The retooling exercise will specifically target JSS teachers handling key subject areas, including Languages, Science, Mathematics, Humanities, and Technical subjects.

The goal is to equip teachers with the necessary skills, methodologies, and assessment techniques aligned with CBC and CBA, ensuring a seamless transition and effective learning experience for students.

The training will be conducted through a structured face-to-face model, taking place at designated venues across various counties. Teachers will be grouped into subject-specific clusters to facilitate an in-depth and focused training experience.

The program will cater to both teachers working in Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions and those in regular schools.

The retooling exercise will follow a smart cascade model, a structured approach designed to ensure maximum reach and effectiveness. This model begins with the training of Master Trainers, who will then pass on the acquired expertise to Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) before the final training of the JSS teachers at the county level.

The process will commence with the training of Master Trainers, a group composed of senior officers drawn from various educational institutions and agencies.

These institutions include:

  1. Teachers Service Commission (TSC)
  2. Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD)
  3. Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC)
  4. Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI)
  5. Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA)
  6. Ministry of Education (MOE)
  7. Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)
  8. Various Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs)

The Master Trainers will undergo an intensive training session before cascading the knowledge to the Trainers of Trainers (ToTs).

This intermediary group consists of Curriculum Support Officers, Teacher Educators (Tutors), TSC sub-county directors, Ministry of Education Quality Assurance Officers, and select champion teachers. Their training will span three days, after which they will be responsible for training the JSS teachers at the county level.

According to TSC, the retooling program is scheduled to take place from April 16 to April 25, 2025. This initiative will primarily focus on teachers who were recruited in November and December 2024 to handle Junior Secondary School in both regular and Special Needs Education institutions, as well as pre-vocational schools.

The participating teachers will be categorized based on their teaching subjects to ensure specialized and practical training sessions.

The learning areas covered in the retooling exercise include:

  1. Languages: English, Kiswahili, and Kenya Sign Language (KSL)
  2. Sciences and Mathematics: Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Health Education
  3. Humanities: Religious Education and Social Studies (which includes Life Skills Education)
  4. Technical and Vocational Subjects: Pre-technical studies, Agriculture, and Nutrition
  5. Creative and Performing Arts: Creative Arts and Sports
  6. Impact and Significance of the Training

The retooling program is expected to play a critical role in improving the delivery of the CBC and CBA.

By enhancing teachers’ knowledge and pedagogical skills, the initiative seeks to create an engaging, student-centered learning environment where learners can develop competencies in line with the curriculum’s goals.

Additionally, the training will focus on equipping teachers with modern instructional approaches, integrating digital tools in teaching, and fostering an assessment culture that aligns with CBA methodologies. This move is essential in ensuring that teachers are adequately prepared to guide learners in their competency development journey.
