LTWP Cuts CO2 Emissions Further, Increases More Investments Into Communities

Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP), Africa’s largest wind farm, today launched its 2024 Sustainability Report. The report, titled “Beyond Turbines: Impacting Kenya, Empowering People,” details LTWP’s 2024 impact that includes delivering 10.89% of Kenya’s grid power, cutting 574,547 tonnes of CO2 emissions, and investing KSh 875 million in community initiatives over six years.
Mrs. Joy Brenda Mdivo, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Chairman, commended LTWP’s contributions to Kenya’s economic and green energy agenda: “The Lake Turkana Wind Power is evidence of progress for Kenya’s energy sector. It exemplifies the transformative power of public-private partnerships in delivering clean, affordable energy and driving sustainable development that directly benefits our citizens,” he said.
The 2024 report showcases how LTWP’s operations extend beyond electricity generation to fostering community well-being, promoting local economic growth, and championing environmental protection. “The 2024 Sustainability Report reveals LTWP’s commitment to powering Kenya’s future, not just with clean energy, but with tangible, positive impact. We are proud to showcase that we are empowering people and driving sustainable growth in Kenya,” said George Njenga, LTWP Executive Chairman.
“LTWP is a successful case study of how a project of this magnitude can have an impact community, local employment, and environmental stewardship is actively shaping Kenya’s socio-economic landscape and propelling its ambitious green energy goals forward,” added Willem Dolleman, Winds of Change (WoC) Chairman.
With Kenya setting an ambitious goal to achieve a 100% green energy transition by 2030, the report showcases LTWP’s contribution towards this target.
Key highlights from the report include:
- Pioneering clean energy: In 2024, LTWP delivered 1,367 GWh of power, contributing 10.89% of Kenya’s grid supply. Since its inception, LTWP has contributed over 9.5 billion kWh into the national grid, significantly reducing Kenya’s reliance on fossil fuels and displacing approximately KSh 167 billion worth of fuel imports.
- Environmental leadership: In 2024, the project achieved a remarkable reduction of 574,547 tonnes in carbon emissions, reinforcing its role in mitigating climate change. LTWP also intensified its environmental initiatives, including planting 528 trees and promoting conservation efforts towards Kenya’s 30% tree cover target.
- Empowering communities: Through its NGO, Winds of Change (WoC), LTWP invested in community health, education, and water initiatives in the Laisamis Constituency. This includes the construction of new classroom blocks, a modern laboratory, and a 46-bed male ward at Laisamis Hospital, serving approximately 116,000 residents in 2024.
- Investing in people: LTWP remains a leading private employer in Marsabit County, with 81% of its 302 employees hailing from local communities.
- Robust safety culture: LTWP achieved 285 ‘Green Days’ in 2024 – days without any recordable incidents – demonstrating its strong commitment to workplace safety through initiatives like the 12 LTWP Golden Rules and extensive Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) training.
“Our 2024 Sustainability Report is a deep dive into the tangible outcomes of our ESG strategy. We are continuously tracking our progress and striving for global best practices in environmental and social governance,” noted Felix Rottmann, LTWP ESG Manager.
