M-PESA Sokoni Caravan Rolls Into Central Kenya To Empower Safaricom Customers

Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has officially flagged off the Mountain Region edition of the M-PESA Sokoni caravan. This marks the third stop in its nationwide tour celebrating 18 years of M-PESA.
The caravan will travel across Thika, Murang’a, Nyeri, Meru, Embu, Laikipia, and Mwingi over the next few days, bringing M-PESA’s suite of business solutions closer to everyday traders.
The Mountain tour was flagged off at Kiganjo in Thika, featuring performances, customer education on different products, and street-level interactions that drew hundreds of residents. The caravan is geared towards deepening Safaricom’s relationship with micro and small enterprises by showcasing practical tools and innovations that can help them run smarter, safer, and more profitable businesses.
“Since its launch 18 years ago, M-PESA has become a trusted partner to millions of Kenyan businesses and individuals. Through M-PESA Sokoni, we are meeting our customers where they are: in the markets, along the highways within their communities. This is our chance to celebrate them, listen to them, and support them with tools that make a real business impact. We believe in their potential, and we are here to walk with them every step of the way,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.

The Mountain Region leg mirrors the successful execution witnessed in the Coastal and Rift Valley tours, blending entertainment with hands-on learning and merchant education, and forums. At each town, the M-PESA Sokoni team engages customers through live demonstrations and high-energy roadshows hosted by popular MCs and presenters from the Royal Media Services. Attendees participate in awareness sessions highlighting key M-PESA for Business tools, including Pochi la Biashara, Lipa na M-PESA, Fuliza ya Biashara, the M-PESA Business App, as well as the hassle-free business credit propositions available to merchants. A crowd favourite across all regions, the interactive game show “M-PESA or the Box” continues to draw excitement, with lucky winners walking away with shopping vouchers, electronics, branded merchandise, and cash prizes.
Alongside the caravan tour, Safaricom will host the Safire Connect Forum for entrepreneurs to discuss digital literacy, financial wellness, and entrepreneurship. There will also be a community-focused programme, the Wezesha Mama initiative, which empowers women-led enterprises by providing financial literacy, digital skills training, and access to seed capital to support their business growth.
The GROW with Safaricom Business forum will bring together SACCO leaders and regional cooperatives, offering practical demonstrations on how technology can streamline processes such as member onboarding, loan tracking, mobile reporting, and secure data integration.
At the same time, the Safaricom Hook Circle will convene young bodaboda entrepreneurs for a skills-building workshop designed to equip them with digital tools and practical business insights to help turn their passions into sustainable ventures.
To wrap up the week, Safaricom will celebrate the resilience and contribution of frontline financial partners during the M-PESA Agent Awards, recognising agents who have shown exceptional dedication in supporting financial access across communities in the region.
Through the M-PESA Sokoni tour, Safaricom is reaffirming its commitment to supporting small businesses, empowering them with the platforms they need to thrive in a digital economy.
