APA Microinsurance, VisionFund, And IBISA Introduce ClimaCash+ and AfyaCash

APA Microinsurance, in partnership with VisionFund Kenya, the financial empowerment and livelihoods subsidiary of World Vision International, and IBISA, a leading global climate Insurtech, has introduced ClimaCash+ and AfyaCash, two innovative, inclusive insurance solutions designed to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), urban & rural communities, and households to bounce back quickly from illness and climate-related risks.
APA Microinsurance and VisionFund have co-created impactful insurance solutions that empower MSMEs, urban & rural communities, and households with coverage that is accessible, relevant, and sustainable. Through this partnership, AfyaCash, a hospital cash benefit product that commenced in 2024, provides policyholders with a daily cash payout during hospitalization. The solution has already made a significant difference, benefiting over 25,000 beneficiaries across Kenya. AfyaCash is seamlessly integrated into all loans disbursed through VisionFund, ensuring that every borrower receives essential financial protection during times of medical need.
Building on this success, the partnership has now expanded to include IBISA, introducing ClimaCash+, a first-of-its-kind parametric solution within APA’s portfolio. ClimaCash+ offers rapid financial protection against weather-related risks such as drought, excessive rainfall, heat, and floods, with payouts automatically triggered by specific weather conditions. This ensures that households, farmers, and small businesses receive prompt support when climate-related disasters strike, helping them recover quickly and rebuild with resilience.
Currently, ClimaCash+ is triggered by rainfall data, as tested during the pilot phase, which commenced in March 2025. This pilot has already reached over 1,500 policyholders across five regions: Eldoret, Nyeri, Nyahururu, Narok, and Nyandarua. In the next phase, additional weather triggers such as drought, excessive heat, and flooding will be introduced and tested in the next phases of development. The partners are now preparing to scale the solution nationwide, extending its protection to thousands more Kenyan households and entrepreneurs whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and micro-enterprises.
Speaking at the launch, Joseph Ogutu, Chairman of APA Microinsurance, stated: “Our partnership with VisionFund and IBISA is built on a shared vision to co-create innovative, practical, and scalable solutions that address real-world challenges head-on. AfyaCash has already demonstrated the transformative power of inclusive insurance in changing lives. With ClimaCash+, we are taking an even bolder step forward to empower vulnerable and underinsured communities to withstand the growing impacts of climate change. Together, we aim to touch and transform over 10 million lives by 2030.”
Ashok Shah, Group CEO, Apollo Investments Limited, highlighted the Group’s continued leadership in driving innovation and sustainability within the insurance industry: “AfyaCash speaks to life-protecting individuals and families when hospitalization disrupts income, while ClimaCash+ speaks to livelihood, safeguarding farmers and households when extreme weather threatens their survival. Together, they embody trust, practicality, and relevance, demonstrating that APA is not merely selling insurance but delivering meaningful solutions that matter in everyday life. These innovations are designed to serve the underinsured, addressing emerging risks and empowering communities to build resilience in an ever-changing world.”
Reuben Mwaura, CEO, VisionFund Kenya, added: “We believe in empowering families to secure their futures. Through AfyaCash and ClimaCash+, our clients not only gain access to financial resources but also peace of mind knowing they are protected against unforeseen health and environmental shocks. This is more than insurance – it is an investment in a sustainable future.”
María Mateo, CEO & Co-Founder, IBISA, emphasized the significance of technology and data-driven solutions in expanding climate resilience: “At IBISA, our vision is to make climate insurance mainstream, bridging the protection gap and enhancing resilience in underserved markets. Through our parametric insurance expertise and monitoring systems, ClimaCash+ ensures that payouts are fast, transparent, and fair. This innovation marks a new chapter for inclusive climate risk management in Kenya and beyond.”
Created from a powerful partnership for change, the launch of ClimaCash+ and AfyaCash highlights APA’s continued commitment to delivering innovative, scalable, and people-centered insurance solutions that align with Kenya’s and Africa’s broader sustainability goals. Together, the three partners are championing a future where access to financial protection is not a privilege but a right, empowering individuals, families, and communities to thrive even in times of uncertainty.
