Safaricom Unveils Four New Millionaires in Ongoing Shangwe 25 Consumer Promotion

Safaricom PLC has introduced four new millionaires in the ongoing Shangwe 25 consumer promotion, marking yet another milestone in the company’s nationwide customer rewards campaign. The announcement brings the total number of millionaires created through the promotion to five, just two weeks after the initiative was launched to commemorate Safaricom’s 25th anniversary.
Each of the newly unveiled winners will take home KSh1 million and receive an additional KSh250,000 dedicated to funding a community project of their choice. This dual-prize structure is part of Safaricom’s broader effort to celebrate customer loyalty while simultaneously driving social impact in local communities across the country.
The latest winners include Josephine Waswa from Bungoma, Bernice Mumo from Makueni, Abdi Dahir from Garissa, and Josephat Mwilaria from Athi River. They join the promotion’s first millionaire, 20-year-old Yvonne Wanjiku Kang’ara from Ngeu in Kiambu County, who was announced earlier in the campaign.
The celebrations in Bungoma were filled with emotion as 36-year-old sugarcane farmer Josephine Waswa stood before her community to receive her prize. Josephine won after purchasing airtime worth KSh19 on M-PESA, a routine action that ended up transforming her life. Overjoyed and still processing the news, she revealed plans to expand her farming business, acquire land, and eventually build a home for her family. As part of her community initiative, Josephine will channel her KSh250,000 project fund towards providing desks for lower primary pupils at Kasosi Primary School — a gesture she says will help give local children a more comfortable learning environment.
In Makueni County, 26-year-old Bernice Mumo described her win as a moment of hope during a period of uncertainty. A recent cosmetology graduate still searching for employment, Bernice had been using M-PESA to buy airtime and pay for home Wi-Fi when she unknowingly entered the draw that would change her life. For her community project, Bernice plans to build and equip a laboratory at Mwalano Dispensary. The facility currently lacks diagnostic equipment, forcing residents to travel long distances for basic tests. She hopes her project will significantly improve access to healthcare for the community.
For 25-year-old Abdi Dahir, the win felt almost unreal. The Garissa-based turn boy and firstborn in his family became emotional upon receiving the call confirming he had won. Abdi frequently buys credit to stay in touch with customers, and it was one of these routine purchases that secured his millionaire status. Abdi intends to use the money to support his family and build a home for his mother. Through his community project, he will donate water tanks and desks to Sangailu Primary School, addressing the water scarcity and inadequate classroom furniture that have challenged learners in the region.
In Athi River, 51-year-old businessman Josephat Mwilaria admitted that he initially dismissed the news as a scam, citing previous encounters with fraudulent messages. It was only after visiting a Safaricom shop that he confirmed the win was legitimate. Josephat, who relies heavily on M-PESA for his business transactions, plans to reinvest part of his winnings to expand his business operations. His chosen community initiative will support Pillars of Hope Children’s Home through food donations and school fees for selected children in need.
Since its launch, the Shangwe 25 promotion has continued to reward thousands of customers across the country every day and every week. The initiative offers a mix of cash rewards, data bundles, devices, and business support tools. More than 800 customers win amounts ranging from KSh10,000, KSh50,000, to KSh100,000 weekly — contributing to a growing pool of over 50,000 weekly winners. Overall, the promotion aims to reward more than five million customers with prizes valued at over KSh250 million.
Participation is simple and open to Safaricom customers who transact on M-PESA, send money, pay bills, redeem Bonga Points, or purchase Safaricom products such as data bundles, voice bundles, digital services, and Home Fibre plans. Merchants and M-PESA agents are also eligible through transactions on Buy Goods, Pochi La Biashara, and payments of KSh1,000 or more.
As the campaign continues, Safaricom has reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating customers while promoting community development, with more winners expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
