Isuzu EA Kicks off Local Production Of mu-X Luxury SUV

Isuzu East Africa (EA) has commenced local production of the seven-seater Isuzu mu-X luxury SUV, marking the model’s full assembly in Kenya and celebrating the rollout of the first units this month.
With this achievement, Isuzu EA now reaches a 100% locally assembled vehicle portfolio, reinforcing the company’s leadership in Kenya’s automotive sector and accelerating the country’s industrialization agenda. This is the first time the Isuzu mu-X model is being assembled outside of Thailand.
The introduction of the mu-X into local production also strengthens national priorities such as the Buy Kenya, Build Kenya initiative and the aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This progress enhances Kenya’s competitiveness as a regional automotive hub by expanding production capacity, increasing local value addition, and creating more employment opportunities across the supply chain.
“The start of local production for the mu-X is a proud moment for Isuzu EA and for Kenya. This move strengthens our country’s manufacturing base, creates meaningful jobs, and expands opportunities for local suppliers and partners to grow with us,” said Rita Kavashe, Chair of the Board and Managing Director, Isuzu EA.
“The motor assembly industry has long fueled economic activity, and today we continue that legacy with renewed energy and purpose.”
The locally assembled mu-X will be available in two variants—1.9L and 3.0L. The expansion aligns with Isuzu EA’s broader assembly strategy, after the addition of the CV & LCV Level III programs, which support job creation, skills growth, and the development of globally competitive suppliers.
A Milestone in Kenya’s Automotive Journey
Isuzu EA leadership notes that the start of mu-X production marks a defining chapter in Kenya’s automotive evolution. Local assembly is expected to improve affordability, shorten delivery timelines, and strengthen aftersales support for customers nationwide.
“Our success has been anchored in the talent and dedication of our people. Over the years, we have invested significantly in skills development and production excellence, and the results speak for themselves,” said Rita Kavashe. “Programs like the Isuzu I-1 Grand Prix have elevated our technicians to global standards. As we grow our local assembly capabilities, we will continue nurturing the next generation of automotive professionals.”
“The local assembly of the mu-X allows us to bring customers closer to a premium SUV that is built for African roads and supported by world-class aftersales service,” added Wanjohi Kangangi, Director of Sales & Marketing, Isuzu EA. “As our vehicles become smarter through technology, we are committed to offering Kenyans greater value, shorter delivery timelines, and exceptional ownership experiences.”
Last year, Isuzu EA took over the assembly and distribution of UD Trucks, the first Isuzu subsidiary to do so outside Japan, expanding transport solutions for customers with heavy commercial needs.
