Social media has suddenly gone silent in Gabon after the country’s media regulator pulled the plug, blaming online drama for stirring tension and dividing society.

The High Authority for Communication declared an immediate suspension of social media platforms until further notice. The message was delivered by spokesperson Jean-Claude Mendome, who painted a picture of a digital space that had spiraled out of control.

According to the regulator, online platforms had become flooded with harmful and offensive content that was eroding public morality, damaging reputations, and weakening social unity. Authorities say false information, cyberbullying, and the leaking of personal data have created an atmosphere that could easily spark conflict and shake the foundations of national stability.

While the regulator did not name the exact platforms affected, the suspension is expected to touch the major social networks many citizens rely on daily for news, conversation, and business. Despite the tough action, officials insisted that freedom of expression remains protected under Gabonese law, stressing that the right to speak and criticize is still recognized as fundamental.

The timing of the ban adds another layer of intrigue. Less than a year into his presidency, Brice Oligui Nguema is already navigating a wave of public unrest. Teachers have been on strike since December over pay and working conditions, and the unrest has spread to other public sectors, including health, higher education, and broadcasting. The streets have been restless, and now the digital streets have gone quiet.

For many Gabonese citizens, social media is more than entertainment it is a space for connection, activism, and business. With platforms now suspended, everything will remain silent. Whether this digital blackout cools tensions or fuels even more debate remains to be seen. What is certain is that Gabon’s online buzz has hit pause, leaving a nation waiting for its next update offline.
