TikTok creators have earned about Sh45 million in just one year after the platform rolled out its monetization programme in the country. This marks a major milestone for Kenya’s growing digital economy and shows that content creation is no longer just a hobby, but a serious income stream.

TikTok introduced monetization features in Kenya that allow creators to earn through brand partnerships, sponsored content, live gifts, and creator campaigns. In the first year alone, hundreds of Kenyan creators benefited, with some earning between Sh50,000 and Sh300,000 per month, depending on their audience size, engagement, and niche.

The earnings are largely driven by advertising, as brands increasingly shift their marketing budgets from traditional media to social platforms where young people spend most of their time. Popular content categories include comedy skits, lifestyle videos, beauty and fashion, dance challenges, education, and social commentary. Creators with over 100,000 followers tend to attract higher paying deals, but even smaller accounts are earning through consistent posting and strong engagement.

TikTok’s local monetization push has also encouraged more young Kenyans to take content creation seriously. Many creators are now investing in better phones, cameras, lighting, and editing tools, while others have registered businesses to manage brand deals professionally. Some have even created employment by hiring videographers, editors, and social media managers.

However, the income is not guaranteed. Earnings depend on factors such as views, follower growth, content quality, and brand demand, meaning creators must stay relevant and active to keep making money. There are also concerns about high competition, as more people join the platform hoping to cash in.

With over 10 million TikTok users in Kenya, the platform is becoming an important source of income for young people at a time when jobs are scarce. As brands continue to embrace digital advertising, TikTok is expected to play an even bigger role in shaping how Kenyans earn, market products, and tell their stories online.
