Government Launches New Airport Taxi App to Challenge Uber and Bolt

The government has officially stepped into the ride-hailing business at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), launching its own taxi-booking app to compete directly with private companies already operating at the airport.

The new platform, introduced by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), is designed to manage all taxi services picking up passengers at the country’s busiest airport. The move places the State in direct competition with popular ride hailing companies that have dominated airport transport for years.

Under the new system, passengers arriving at JKIA will be encouraged to book taxis through the official airport app. The platform is expected to register approved drivers, set standard rates, and monitor trips to enhance safety and accountability. Airport officials argue that this will reduce disputes over fares, eliminate unauthorized drivers, and improve the overall passenger experience.

The decision, however, is likely to shake up the transport business at the airport. For years, private ride-hailing firms have built strong customer bases due to convenience, digital payments, and transparent pricing. The State’s entry into the market introduces fresh competition that could affect how drivers and companies operate within the airport zone.

Some industry players believe the move could create tension between regulators and private operators. Others argue that healthy competition may improve service quality and pricing for passengers.

For travelers, the main concern will be reliability, pricing, and ease of use. If the government app offers smooth booking, fair charges, and safe rides, passengers may quickly adopt it. However, if technical challenges or service delays arise, customers may continue to prefer existing private platforms.

As the rollout begins, drivers, private companies, are determined to know whether the State can successfully compete in a market it has long regulated from the sidelines.
