The Government of Kenya has officially opened the door for foreign investors to step in and help rescue Kenya Airways (KQ), one of the country’s most important but financially troubled national institutions.

In a major policy shift, the National Treasury announced that it is seeking a strategic international partner willing to inject between Sh154.8 billion and Sh258 billion into the national carrier to support a full turnaround plan.

According to Treasury officials, the government will soon publish a global Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting qualified investors to review the airline’s books and submit proposals. The aim is not just to raise cash, but to attract an investor with strong experience in aviation, route management, fleet planning, and airline operations. The government believes this expertise is critical if Kenya Airways is to return to profitability and compete effectively with regional and global airlines.

Kenya Airways has struggled for years under the weight of heavy debts, rising operational costs, and reduced passenger numbers, challenges that were made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic. To keep the airline running, the government has already stepped in several times, including taking over more than Sh63 billion in debt obligations. Despite these interventions, the airline has continued to post losses, putting pressure on public finances and taxpayers.

Treasury officials now say the solution lies in bringing in a strategic investor who can help restructure the airline’s operations. This includes reviewing unprofitable routes, modernising the fleet to reduce fuel and maintenance costs, and improving staff productivity. The goal is to build a leaner, more efficient airline that can stand on its own.

The announcement has sparked optimism in the market, with investors viewing the move as a long-overdue step towards stabilising the airline. Analysts say that if the right partner is found, Kenya Airways could once again become a profitable airline and a key driver of tourism, trade, and national pride.
