KMTC Announces Scholarships For The Following Courses With Stipends, How to Apply

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has unveiled an expansive scholarship programme under the East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology (EACE-UN), a flagship initiative designed to bolster specialised training and enhance the quality of kidney-related healthcare services across Kenya and the wider East African region.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 26, KMTC Chief Executive Officer Kelly Oluoch announced that the scholarships are being offered in collaboration with Kenya’s Ministry of Health and the East Africa Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology.

According to KMTC, the programme is financed through a loan facility from the African Development Bank, underscoring the regional and international commitment to strengthening specialised medical training and improving patient outcomes in renal and urological care.

The scholarship initiative is structured to support advanced training in nine higher diploma programmes, alongside a six-month specialised short course. These programmes will be delivered across various KMTC campuses nationwide, ensuring broader access to health professionals from different counties.

Among the courses offered are Higher Diplomas in Medical Engineering, with specialised tracks in Dialysis Equipment, Therapeutic Equipment, and Diagnostic Equipment. These programmes are intended to build technical expertise in maintaining and managing life-saving medical technologies used in kidney care and related treatments.

Clinical practitioners will also benefit from the Higher Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery (Nephrology), which focuses on equipping clinical officers with advanced skills in diagnosing and managing kidney diseases. In parallel, nurses can pursue the Higher Diploma in Nephrology Nursing, a programme tailored to strengthen patient care in dialysis units, renal wards, and transplant centres.

Other specialised areas covered under the scholarship include Higher Diploma programmes in Nutrition and Dietetics (Renal Nutrition), Medical Laboratory Sciences, Occupational Therapy, and Renal Pharmacy.

These disciplines reflect the multidisciplinary approach required in managing chronic kidney disease and other renal conditions, where patient care extends beyond diagnosis and medication to include nutrition management, rehabilitation, and laboratory monitoring.

Additionally, KMTC will offer a six-month short course in Renal Transplant Nursing, aimed at enhancing the skills of nurses involved in pre- and post-transplant patient management. This short course is expected to contribute significantly to improving transplant outcomes and expanding Kenya’s capacity to handle complex renal procedures.

Application Process and Requirements

Prospective applicants have been advised to access the KMTC admissions portal to download and complete the relevant application forms. All submissions must be made on or before March 15, 2026.

To qualify for consideration, candidates must first secure an unconditional admission offer for their chosen programme. According to Oluoch, obtaining this offer is a mandatory prerequisite before a scholarship award can be granted.

The scholarship package will cover full tuition fees and include a stipend to assist beneficiaries with living expenses during the course of their studies. However, Oluoch cautioned that awards are subject to the availability of funds.

As part of the application requirements, candidates must submit a handwritten essay of no more than 200 words. The essay should outline why they believe they deserve the scholarship and describe the impact they intend to make in their communities upon completing their training.

“To qualify, applicants are expected to attach a handwritten essay of not more than two hundred (200) words explaining why they feel that they deserve the scholarship and the contribution they will make to the community upon graduation,” the statement noted.

Most of the higher diploma programmes will run for two years on a full-time basis. The training is specifically targeted at practicing health professionals, including biomedical engineers, clinical officers, nurses, nutrition officers, laboratory professionals, occupational therapists, and pharmaceutical technologists.

In an effort to strengthen public healthcare systems at the county level, priority will be given to county government employees, KMTC staff members, and applicants with at least three years of work experience. This strategic focus aims to ensure that the skills gained through the programme are quickly integrated into existing health facilities, thereby improving service delivery in public hospitals and specialised renal units.

The EACE-UN initiative reflects a broader strategy to address the rising burden of kidney disease and related complications in Kenya and the East African region. With increasing cases of hypertension, diabetes, and other conditions linked to renal failure, the demand for skilled nephrology professionals continues to grow.

Through this scholarship programme, KMTC and its partners seek not only to expand the pool of specialised health workers but also to build sustainable capacity within health institutions. By investing in advanced training and multidisciplinary collaboration, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to improving access to quality kidney care, reducing patient referrals abroad, and strengthening local expertise in renal treatment and technology management.

Applicants seeking further clarification have been directed to submit their inquiries via email to admissions@kmtc.ac.ke
