TSC Unveils New Training Programme For Primary And Secondary Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced plans to roll out a comprehensive training programme for both primary and secondary school teachers beginning next week, as part of efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

The upcoming training by TSC will target classroom teachers as well as school administrators, including Heads of Institutions (HOIs), who play a key role in guiding learners through the new education framework

According to TSC, the programme is designed to address emerging challenges experienced by learners, teachers, and school leaders as the country transitions fully to CBE.

Already, HOIs across the country have been notified by their respective Sub-County Directors of Education about the training, which will focus on career guidance.

The sessions will be conducted online, allowing teachers and administrators to participate without disrupting ongoing learning activities in schools.

TSC said the training will equip teachers with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively guide learners in identifying and selecting suitable career pathways based on individual abilities, interests, and learning outcomes.

Under the CBE framework, learners are expected to make informed choices early in their academic journey, making career guidance a critical component of teaching and school leadership.

In junior schools, learners will be required to select specific pathways before transitioning to senior school. These pathways are meant to nurture learners’ talents, strengths, and interests, while preparing them for further education, training, or entry into the job market.

Senior schools, on the other hand, will be expected to align their programmes with the selected pathways, depending on their available resources, teaching staff, and infrastructure. This means schools will adapt their curricula and facilities to support learners pursuing different areas of specialization.

The three main pathways under the CBE system include the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway, the Arts and Sports pathway, and the Social Sciences pathway.

Each pathway is designed to provide learners with focused learning experiences that will shape their future career choices and life skills.

TSC noted that by training teachers and administrators on effective career guidance, the commission aims to ensure a smoother transition for learners within the CBE system and improve learning outcomes across the board.

The training is also expected to enhance teachers’ confidence in supporting learners as they navigate the new education structure and make critical decisions about their future careers.
