What Kenyan Importers Should Know as Chinese New Year Disrupts Trade

Kenyan importers are being advised to plan carefully as the Chinese New Year celebrations continue to affect global trade and supply chains. China is Kenya’s biggest source of imports, supplying goods such as electronics, machinery, textiles, spare parts, household items, and raw materials used by local manufacturers. When business activities slow down in China, Kenyan traders often feel the impact almost immediately.

During the Chinese New Year period, many factories, ports, and logistics companies in China close or operate with limited staff for up to two weeks. This leads to delays in production, shipping, and delivery of goods. For Kenyan importers, this can mean late shipments, stock shortages, higher freight costs, and disruptions to business operations.

Business experts warn that orders placed too close to the holiday period may take longer than usual to be processed. Even after factories reopen, there is often a backlog of orders as companies rush to catch up. This congestion can push delivery timelines further and increase shipping charges, especially for sea freight.

Small and medium sized businesses are usually the most affected because they rely heavily on regular stock turnover. Delays can lead to empty shelves, lost customers, and reduced income. Importers are therefore encouraged to plan their orders early, communicate closely with suppliers, and keep extra stock where possible to cushion against disruptions.

The Chinese New Year also affects shipping schedules. Fewer vessels are available during the holiday, and ports become congested once operations resume. This may result in higher container costs and longer clearance times at Kenyan ports, particularly at the Port of Mombasa.

Experts further advise traders to explore alternative sourcing options where possible, including regional suppliers, to reduce over reliance on China. While China remains a key trading partner, diversification can help businesses manage risks during seasonal disruptions.
