AI Threatens To Shake Up The Global News Industry

The global news industry is facing a new challenge as artificial intelligence tools begin to reshape how information is created, distributed and consumed. Media analysts warn that powerful tech companies are now moving deeper into the news business, targeting a market estimated to be worth about Sh16 trillion globally. The shift could dramatically change how news organisations operate and how journalists earn revenue from their work.

For years, traditional media houses have struggled to maintain their income as digital platforms dominated online advertising. Companies such as Google, Meta Platforms, and other large technology firms gradually captured a large share of global advertising revenue, leaving many news organisations with shrinking profits. Now, with the rise of artificial intelligence, these same tech companies are expanding their influence even further by using AI systems to gather, summarise and distribute news content.

Artificial intelligence tools can quickly scan thousands of news articles, extract key points and generate summaries for readers within seconds. While this technology can make information easier to access, it also raises serious concerns for journalists and publishers. Many media executives fear that AI platforms may benefit from news content without fairly compensating the organisations that invest time, money and expertise in producing original journalism.

The concern is not just about technology but about control of the information economy. News organisations spend significant resources employing reporters, editors and photographers to investigate stories, verify facts and present accurate information to the public. If AI systems can simply collect and repackage this work for users on tech platforms, media companies risk losing both their audiences and their revenue.

The challenge is particularly serious in the digital era, where many readers already get their news through social media feeds and search engines rather than visiting the websites of traditional media houses. If AI-powered tools become the main gateway through which people access information, the relationship between news organisations and their readers could weaken even further.

However, some analysts believe artificial intelligence also presents opportunities for newsrooms. AI can help journalists analyse large datasets, identify patterns in complex information and speed up routine tasks such as transcription and translation. This could allow reporters to spend more time focusing on investigative reporting and in-depth storytelling.

For the news industry, the stakes are high. Artificial intelligence could either become a powerful tool that strengthens journalism or a disruptive force that further weakens an already struggling business model. The decisions made today by media companies, regulators and technology firms will play a major role in shaping the future of how the world receives and trusts its news.
