CA Sets New Technical Standards for Phones in Kenya

Kenya’s communications sector is entering a new phase after the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) announced updated technical standards for mobile phones in the country.

The move, unveiled this week, is aimed at improving device quality, enhancing cybersecurity, and ensuring better network compatibility across Kenya’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem. Under the new guidelines, all phones imported, sold, or used in Kenya must meet stricter requirements on performance, safety, and data protection.

According to the CA, the standards will help eliminate substandard and counterfeit devices that have long flooded the market, often frustrating users with poor connectivity and short lifespans. The authority emphasized that compliant phones will deliver stronger network signals, improved internet speeds, and more reliable access to services such as mobile banking and e-government platforms.

The new regulations also place a strong focus on consumer protection. Phone manufacturers and importers will now be required to certify their devices before entry into the Kenyan market. Retailers found selling non-compliant phones risk penalties, including fines or license suspension.

Industry players have welcomed the move cautiously. While some argue the standards will boost consumer confidence and align Kenya with global best practices, others warn that compliance costs could lead to a slight increase in handset prices, at least in the short term.

For millions of Kenyans who rely on mobile phones for communication, business, and financial transactions, the changes signal a future of more reliable and secure digital experiences. As enforcement begins, the CA says the ultimate goal is simple: to ensure every device in the hands of Kenyan users meets a standard worthy of a modern digital economy.
