Growing Number Of Kenyans Juggle Multiple Jobs To Make Ends Meet

Across Kenya’s bustling cities and quiet towns, a growing number of citizens are taking on multiple jobs just to stay afloat. A new report highlights the rising trend of Kenyans juggling side hustles alongside their main sources of income, painting a picture of resilience in the face of economic pressure.

For many, a single paycheck is no longer enough. Rising costs of living—especially food, rent, and transport—have pushed workers to seek additional income streams. From ride-hailing after office hours to running small online businesses, Kenyans are finding creative ways to bridge the gap between earnings and expenses.

James Mwangi, a bank clerk in Nairobi, begins his day at 8 a.m. and ends it well past midnight. After leaving the office, he switches roles and drives for a ride-hailing service. “It’s exhausting,” he admits, “but I have a family to support. One job just doesn’t cut it anymore.”

The report notes that young professionals are leading this shift, leveraging digital platforms to freelance, trade, or offer services online. However, while side hustles provide relief, they also come with challenges—burnout, reduced productivity, and limited time for family or rest.

Experts warn that this trend, though innovative, reflects deeper economic strain. Without stable and sufficient incomes, more people may be forced into overworking, risking their health and well-being.

Still, amid the struggle, there is a strong sense of determination. Kenyans are adapting, refusing to give up despite the odds. As one respondent in the report put it, “We do what we must to survive.”

The rise of multiple job holders is not just a statistic—it is a story of endurance, sacrifice, and the relentless pursuit of a better life.
