Kenya Met Warns Of Heavy Rains Across Several Regions This Week

Kenyans across various parts of the country have been advised to prepare for continued rainfall over the coming days, following a fresh advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met)
In its latest five-day weather outlook, covering the period from Tuesday, March 24 to Saturday, March 28, Kenya Met warned that several regions are likely to experience persistent rains, with some areas facing isolated episodes of heavy downpours.
According to the forecast, rainfall activity is expected to intensify in multiple regions, including the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the wider Rift Valley region, the Southeastern lowlands, the Coastal strip, as well as parts of Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya.
The department cautioned that in some of these areas, the rains could be heavy at times, potentially disrupting normal activities. In the central highlands and nearby counties—such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, residents should anticipate intermittent rains and showers for the better part of the week.
However, there will be brief breaks in the weather, particularly on Wednesday morning and afternoon, as well as Thursday morning, when sunny intervals are expected to prevail.
Temperatures in these regions are projected to remain relatively mild, with daytime highs reaching about 30°C and nighttime lows dropping to approximately 9°C.
Meanwhile, counties in the southeastern region, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta, together with the eastern parts of Tana River County, are also expected to receive additional rainfall over the same period.
Despite the general wet conditions, residents in these areas may experience occasional sunshine, especially on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings. The temperatures here are forecast to be slightly higher, with maximums of around 33°C and minimums of about 14°C.
Along the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, as well as the Tana Delta, the outlook indicates a week dominated by continuous rainfall. Showers are likely to occur throughout the day in many of these locations, contributing to humid conditions.
Temperatures along the coastline are expected to remain warm, with highs of up to 35°C and lows averaging 24°C. In western Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley, a combination of rain, showers, and thunderstorms is expected.
Counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok will likely experience these conditions throughout the week.
The only notable break from the rain is expected on Friday morning, when sunny conditions may briefly occur. Daytime temperatures in these areas are predicted to peak at around 31°C, while nighttime temperatures could fall to approximately 10°C.
Further north, Turkana and Samburu counties are also expected to receive rainfall throughout the week, although these regions will continue to experience significantly higher temperatures compared to other parts of the country.
Daytime temperatures are forecast to rise as high as 38°C, while nighttime temperatures may drop to about 10°C. Similarly, residents in northeastern counties, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, should prepare for ongoing rains during most of the forecast period.
A brief respite is anticipated on Thursday afternoon, when sunny conditions may temporarily set in. These areas are expected to record high temperatures of up to 38°C and minimum temperatures of around 17°C.
Overall, the Kenya Meteorological Department has urged the public to remain vigilant and plan accordingly, particularly in regions prone to heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to stay updated with daily weather reports and take necessary precautions, especially in areas that may be vulnerable to flooding or other rain-related hazards.
