Kenya Met Warns Of Heavy Rains This Weekend In The Following Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department, Kenya Met, has issued a detailed weather advisory urging residents across multiple regions of the country to brace for a significant change in weather patterns over the coming days.

According to the notice released by Kenya Met on Friday, March 27, the country is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over five days, stretching through to Tuesday, March 31.

In its forecast, Kenya Met highlighted that several regions, including Central Kenya, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, and Northeastern Kenya, are likely to receive substantial rainfall.

These rains are expected to intensify as the days progress, raising concerns about potential disruptions to daily activities as well as increased risks of flooding in vulnerable areas.

Counties situated in the Western region, the Rift Valley, and around the Lake Victoria Basin are projected to be among the most affected. Areas such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia are expected to receive particularly heavy downpours.

In addition, counties including Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet are also likely to experience similar weather conditions. The advisory further lists Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot as regions that should prepare for persistent rainfall during this period.

In Central Kenya, the forecast indicates a slightly less intense but still notable pattern of moderate rainfall. Counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi are all expected to receive consistent rains over the five-day window.

Residents in these areas have been advised to plan accordingly, particularly given the likelihood of changing weather conditions throughout the day.

The department explained that most regions will experience a mix of sunny and cloudy conditions in the mornings, creating a deceptive sense of calm before the onset of rainfall later in the day. Afternoon and evening showers are expected to dominate, with some areas experiencing prolonged downpours.

Of particular concern is the Western region, the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin, where the rains are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms. These storms could increase the risk of flash floods, especially in low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage systems.

Residents living near rivers, floodplains, and other high-risk zones have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

The coastal region is also expected to experience rainfall, although at moderate levels. Counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with the Tana Delta, are forecasted to receive steady rains during the same period.

While the intensity may not match that of inland regions, the rains could still disrupt transport and other economic activities. Despite the widespread rainfall predicted across much of the country, the South Eastern lowlands are expected to remain largely unaffected.

According to the advisory, these areas will continue to experience sunny and dry conditions throughout the five days, providing a stark contrast to the wetter regions elsewhere.

In addition to the rainfall forecast, the meteorological department also issued a temperature advisory warning of notably cold nights in parts of Central Kenya.

Temperatures in these regions are expected to drop to as low as 7°C, creating chilly conditions that may affect vulnerable populations. Counties likely to experience these cold nights include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.

Conversely, other parts of the country, particularly in the coastal areas as well as Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya, are expected to experience high daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C. This sharp contrast between cold nights and hot days across different regions underscores the diverse and dynamic weather patterns currently affecting the country.

Overall, the Kenya Meteorological Department has advised the public to stay updated with regular weather reports and to take appropriate safety measures. Residents are encouraged to prepare for possible flooding, dress warmly in colder regions, and remain cautious during thunderstorms and heavy rains.
