KRA Introduces Digital Seals For Cargo Tracking

BY Soko Directory Team · March 25, 2026 07:03 am

The Kenya Revenue Authority is preparing to introduce a new system called electronic seals, also known as eSeals, to improve the tracking of goods moving across borders in East Africa. This move is aimed at increasing transparency, reducing tax evasion, and ensuring that cargo reaches its destination safely without being tampered with along the way. The system will mainly affect trucks transporting goods from ports such as Mombasa to neighboring countries.

These eSeals are small digital devices placed on cargo containers. They allow authorities to monitor the movement of goods in real time using GPS technology. If a truck deviates from its expected route or if the seal is broken before reaching its destination, the system immediately sends an alert. This helps the government prevent smuggling and loss of revenue, which has been a major challenge in regional trade.

However, while the system brings benefits to the government and improves security, many truck drivers and transport companies are worried about the increased costs. The installation and management of these eSeals come with additional fees that transporters must pay. For businesses already struggling with high fuel prices and operational expenses, this new cost is seen as a burden. Some truckers fear that these extra charges will reduce their profits or force them to increase the price of transporting goods.

Transporters argue that the process of installing and removing the eSeals may take time, especially at busy border points. If not managed properly, this could slow down the movement of goods, affecting supply chains across the region. Delays at borders have always been a challenge in East African trade, and stakeholders are worried that the new system could make the situation worse if there is no proper planning.

The Kenya Revenue Authority believes that the long-term benefits will outweigh these challenges. By improving monitoring, the system can reduce illegal trade activities and create a fair business environment. It may also help build trust with international trade partners, as goods will be better secured and tracked.
