Students Eligible For Scholarships Ahead Of KUCCPS Applications

BY Getrude Mathayo · March 16, 2026 03:03 pm

The University Fund of Kenya has set the record straight on eligibility for the scholarship applications, even as 2025 KCSE students await the Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to open university applications.

In a string of clarifications on its official website, the University Fund noted that those eligible for the university scholarship must be Kenyan citizens who sat for the KCSE examination between 2022 and 2025.

At the same time, they must be placed by KUCCPS to pursue undergraduate, diploma, or certificate courses at accredited public universities or TVET colleges.

“To be eligible for the scholarship, one must be a Kenyan and a candidate who sat their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination from 2022 onwards,” it stated.

“KUCCPS must place them to pursue an undergraduate, diploma, craft certificate, or artisan course at one of Kenya’s accredited public universities or TVET colleges,” the agency added.

It is worth noting that the fund, however, excludes international students who come to study in Kenya.

Students admitted to private universities are also excluded from the scholarship programme, although they remain eligible to apply for loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

The clarification follows an announcement by the fund’s CEO, Edwin Wanyoyi, that KSh4.2 billion will be disbursed to public universities for the 2025/2026 financial year.

The funds will facilitate the education of students who recently joined public universities across the country and are under the higher education funding programme.

How The Scholarship Will be Awarded

The scholarship awards will be categorised differently, depending on the level of need.

To determine the level of need, officials will use the Means Testing Instrument (MTI) tool before funding the students.

According to officials, the fund will provide scholarships ranging from 30 per cent to 70 per cent of the total fees. Any deficit will be covered by the household contributions and HELB loans.

To receive the scholarships, students will be required to tender applications through the higher education funding portal after placement by KUCCPS.
