The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a weather advisory warning that several regions across Kenya should prepare for continued rainfall over the coming days, with some areas expected to experience heavier-than-usual downpours.

The forecast, released on Tuesday, March 10, outlines a seven-day outlook indicating that many parts of the country will receive rain between March 10 and March 16. According to Kenya, the rains are expected to affect a wide geographical area, including Western Kenya, the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and sections of the South Coast.

Meteorologists have cautioned that while some areas will experience light showers, others may receive intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

In Western Kenya and parts of the Rift Valley, counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo and Uasin Gishu are expected to record significant rainfall during the period. Additional counties likely to experience similar weather conditions include Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

The weather department noted that in many of these areas, mornings will often begin with cloudy conditions and occasional light showers in a few locations. As the day progresses, the weather is expected to become more active, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms developing in several places. These showers could extend into the evening and night in some areas.

“Morning rains are likely to occur over a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few to several places, while night showers are also likely in isolated areas,” the agency stated in the advisory.

In the Central Highlands, rainfall is also expected to affect counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi, as well as Nairobi. Residents in these regions have been advised to expect light showers in the early hours of the day, followed by clearer intervals before rainfall intensifies later in the afternoon.

Kenya Met explained that mornings in the Central Highlands may feature occasional cloudiness accompanied by light rain. As temperatures rise, the skies are likely to clear temporarily, giving way to sunny spells.

However, showers are expected to return later in the afternoon, and in some cases may spread to several locations before nightfall. A similar weather pattern is expected to affect the South-eastern Lowlands, including the counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta.

Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale are also projected to receive rainfall during the forecast period. Despite the anticipated rains in many areas, high daytime temperatures are still expected in some regions.

The meteorological department indicated that temperatures exceeding 30°C could be recorded in parts of the Coast, the South-eastern Lowlands, and areas in North-eastern and North-western Kenya. These warmer conditions may combine with humidity to create uncomfortable weather during the day.

Meanwhile, significantly cooler conditions are expected at night in some highland areas. Nighttime temperatures could fall below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands and the Central Rift Valley. Cooler nights are also likely in areas surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro, where residents are advised to prepare for chilly conditions.

The weather department has encouraged residents in the affected regions to stay updated with regular forecasts and take necessary precautions, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall or thunderstorms.

Authorities also advise farmers, motorists and residents living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as weather conditions evolve over the coming week.
