KRA Plans to Reach 22 Million Taxpayers Using a WhatsApp Chatbot

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is taking a new step to improve tax collection by targeting up to 22 million taxpayers and filers nationwide. To make this possible, KRA is introducing a WhatsApp chatbot that will help people file taxes, ask questions, and get quick support directly from their phones.

This new system is part of KRA’s effort to make tax services easier and more accessible, especially for young people and small business owners who mostly use mobile phones. Many Kenyans already use WhatsApp daily, so KRA believes this platform will help reach more people compared to traditional methods like visiting offices or using websites that may be harder to navigate.

The chatbot will allow users to register for a tax PIN, file returns, check compliance status, and receive reminders about deadlines. Instead of waiting in long queues or struggling with complex systems, taxpayers will now be able to complete tasks in a simple chat format. This is expected to reduce errors and save time for both KRA and the public.

KRA’s main goal is to expand the tax base. Many eligible taxpayers in Kenya are still not registered or do not file their returns regularly. By targeting 22 million people, the authority hopes to bring more individuals and small businesses into the tax system. This is important because taxes help the government fund essential services like healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security.

The move also supports the government’s digital transformation agenda, which focuses on using technology to improve public services. With the rise of smartphones and internet access in Kenya, digital tools like chatbots are becoming more effective in reaching citizens in both urban and rural areas.

However, the success of this plan will depend on public awareness and trust. KRA will need to educate people on how to use the chatbot and ensure that the system is secure to protect users’ personal information. There may also be challenges for those who are not familiar with digital tools or who lack internet access.
