Mbadi Announces Shift from Petrol to Electric Cars Amid Middle East War Crisis

Kenya’s transport future took a bold turn this week after John Mbadi announced a major policy shift encouraging the transition from petrol-powered vehicles to electric cars, citing rising global tensions in the Middle East.

The announcement comes as the ongoing conflict in oil-rich regions disrupts supply chains and drives fuel prices higher across the globe. In Kenya, motorists have already begun to feel the pressure, with pump prices climbing and public transport fares following closely behind.

Speaking during a press briefing, Mbadi emphasized that the country could no longer rely heavily on imported fossil fuels. “This crisis is a wake-up call,” he said. “We must invest in sustainable and locally manageable energy solutions.”

Under the proposed plan, the government will introduce incentives to make electric vehicles (EVs) more affordable. These include tax reductions on EV imports, support for local assembly, and the rollout of charging infrastructure in major cities like Nairobi and Mombasa. The policy also aims to encourage private investors to venture into the electric mobility space.

For many Kenyans, the shift presents both opportunity and uncertainty. While environmental advocates have welcomed the move as a step toward reducing carbon emissions, some citizens are concerned about the high upfront cost of electric cars and the availability of charging stations, especially outside urban centers.

Transport operators, particularly those in the matatu sector, are watching closely. If implemented effectively, the policy could lower long-term operating costs, but transitioning fleets will require significant financial support.

Experts believe the move could position Kenya as a regional leader in green transport if executed well. However, they caution that success will depend on consistent policy implementation and public awareness.

As global instability continues to affect oil markets, Kenya’s push toward electric mobility may not just be a policy shift—but a necessary evolution.
