BY Getrude Mathayo · August 11, 2023 08:08 pm

On 8th August, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) gazetted new salaries and allowances to be paid to teachers, civil servants, and other state officers.

The SRC gazetted the new salaries so that government departments which include TSC and Public Service Commission (PSC) can implement the increase. The commission has increased salaries for state and other public officers with arrears backdated to 1st July 2023. The changes will be on the August payslips.

The biggest beneficiary in the latest reviews of salaries are teachers, police officers, disciplined forces, and workers in county government. They will get salary increments that are higher than those of the other public servants.

The increment will cost taxpayers Ksh21.7 billion more for the financial year 2023/2024. Teachers have been allocated 9.6 billion shillings, uniformed and discipline forces will receive 4.5 billion shillings, and county government 4 billion shillings.

Of the Ksh21.7 billion, executive state officers will get Ksh126.9 million while Parliament state officers will get 78.9 million. Judiciary state officers will get Ksh308.2 million, county state officers will get Ksh408.9 million, and civil servants will get Ksh1.8 billion.

County governments will pocket Ksh4.1 billion while uniformed and disciplined forces will earn Ksh4.5 billion. Other public officers will get Ksh745.6 million.

Addressing the media on August 9, SRC chairperson Lyn Mengich said that the salary review covers both state and public officers with an intent to achieve sustainability.

Mengich said the review was based on factors including the remuneration and benefits structure considering the employees who are below the market positioning.

“Therefore, this review seeks to adjust salary structures that are below the 50th percentile to achieve equity and fairness through harmonization to the extent of affordability and physical sustainability,” Mengich said.

According to the commission rating, State officers are at the 45th percentile, state corporations at (89 pc), civil servants of national and county government are below(39pc), teaching services (at 36pc), public universities are (at 49pc) and other public officers at 84 percentile.
