KCB See Off Impala in Ruthless Season Opener

KCB Rugby Club launched their 2025/2026 Kenya Cup campaign in emphatic style, dismantling Impala RFC 87–05 in a one-sided encounter at the KCB Sports Club, Ruaraka.

The tone was set early when scrum-half Samuel Asati dived over within the first five minutes, with Brian Wahinya adding the extras for a 7–0 lead. Minutes later, winger Floyd Wabwire showcased blistering pace to secure KCB’s second try, Wahinya converting once again for a 14–0 advantage.

Impala briefly clawed back through George Okoa, who crossed after capitalizing on a defensive lapse, but the conversion sailed wide, leaving the score at 14–5.

KCB quickly reasserted dominance. Asati turned provider, setting up captain Felix Ojoo for the team’s third try, before Wahinya’s flawless boot stretched the margin to 21–5. Impala’s Brian Ingati was soon sent to the sin bin, and KCB punished the numerical advantage with another try off a well-worked scrum, Wahinya converting for 28–5.

New signing Joseph Wanjala announced himself in style, scoring his debut try before adding a second moments later. Wahinya maintained a perfect conversion rate through both efforts, pushing the score to 42–5. Festus Shiasi capped the first-half scoring spree with a simple catch-and-run effort, sending KCB into the break leading 47–5.

The second half mirrored the first as KCB continued their relentless assault. Mike Wekesa pounced on a loose ball to score early, Wahinya converting for 54–5. Wabwire secured his brace soon after, before tries from Nelson Nyandat, another from Wekesa, and a dazzling run to the line by Vincent Onyala powered KCB beyond the 80-point mark. Branton Biko sealed the afternoon with the final try, closing the score at 87–5.

Wekesa was deservedly named Man of the Match after two tries and several decisive line breaks that kept Impala on the back foot throughout.

Head coach Andrew Amonde praised the team’s cohesion and hunger, applauding both the veterans and the new additions. “The boys showed great intent from the start. We executed our systems well and maintained discipline for most of the match. There is still more to improve, but this is a solid marker for the season ahead,” Amonde said.

Despite the comfortable win, Amonde emphasized the need to refocus quickly as KCB prepares for Match Day 2, where they face a stern away test against Kisumu RFC. “We can enjoy today’s win, but Kisumu away is never easy. We must reset, recover, and prepare for another big challenge,” he added.
