Angola Overtakes Nigeria as Africa’s largest Oil Producer – Africa Business RoundUp

Nigeria has again lost its place as the top oil producer in Africa after Angola overtook it.

Nigeria had overtaken Angola in December 2016 according to the monthly report released by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) following a ceasefire announced by Niger Delta militant but the southern African country has claimed the top spot again.

According to OPEC’s monthly oil market report, Angola was producing 1.651 million barrels per day according to secondary sources while for direct communications between the country and OPEC, production levels were put at an average of 1.615 million. Read

Nji Collins Gbah,17, became the first African winner in Google’s annual coding competition from Cameroonian despite the partial shutdown of internet in his country. Nji Collins Gbah is the first African to win the competition.

“I was anxious,” Gbah wrote in a blog post published a day before the deadline on Jan. 16. But “I had to find ways to turn my nervousness into creativity and fun.” Gbah said that he chose to participate with OpenMRS “because the whole idea of writing code to save lives was really amazing and I wanted to be part of it.” Read:

Germany, Kenya To Launch a Regional Science University

Kenya and Germany are to establish an East African-German University of Sciences. The new institution will respond to education and training requirements across the region. The scheme was announced at the German-African Business Summit in Nairobi last week.

Jutta Frasch, Germany’s ambassador to Kenya, and Kenyan Cabinet Secretary of Education Fred Matiang’i, signed a joint declaration of intent during the German-African Business Summit held in Nairobi from 8-10 February, specifying that the new institution would be designed along the lines of German universities of applied sciences, the former fachhochschulen. Chinese firm secures $2.3bn contract to build Uganda’s MoKaKi railway section

China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has signed a contract to build the section of the MoKaKi railway between the Kenyan border and Kampala, which will require a $2.3bn investment.

MoKaKi is the new name for the standard gauge railway (SGR) that is expected to run from Mombasa, through Nairobi, to Kampala and on to Kigali. China Road and Bridge Corporation has now completed 98% of the first section, between Mombasa and Nairobi. Read:
