Crime Increased By 7 Percent in First Quarter of 2018 – National Police

The National Police Service has released its quarterly crime report indicating that the crime in the country has increased by 7 percent.

According to the report, 21,263 cases were reported in the first three months of 2018, an increase from 19,815 cases reported in a similar period in 2017.

The report notes that there was an increase in several categories of offenses. For instance, offenses against morality increased by 9 percent or 119, other offenses against persons increased by 339 or 6 percent, robbery cases increased by 23 percent, stealing by 8 percent, dangerous drugs by 24 percent and other penal code offenses by 10 percent.

According to the report, there was a decrease in homicide by 5 percent, theft by servant by 7 percent and offenses involving police offices by 57 percent.

The report progressively notes that crime increased by 15 percent in January, came down by 8.9 percent in February and further to 1.6 percent in March.

The report also notes that there was a significant decrease in the number of road accidents following “stringent enforcement of traffic rules and regulations” that saw accidents claiming 609 lives compared to 744 at the same time the previous year.

According to the report, offenses of procuring abortion went up by 60 cases, canceling birth by 10 and unnatural offenses by 41 as compared to last year.

In the period under review, a total number of 33 officers were killed from all around the country. Officers killed in accidents were 13, gunshot wounds/grenade attacks accounted for 16 deaths and suicide for 2 deaths.
