Photos And Names Of HELB Defaulters To Be Published On Local Newspapers

Are you a beneficiary of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and have not been servicing your loan? Well, expect to see your name and face published in the local dailies very soon.

HELB has noted that the desperate move is for the purpose of saving needy children who need loans yet those that took years ago are not servicing them making it difficult to finance the current needy cases.

The Education Loans Board has revealed that the names and pictures it plans to publish are those of beneficiaries who have defaulted from 1975 to date.

“Some beneficiaries who are in default have not responded to previous communication …therefore sustained default, hinders funding of other deserving Kenyan youth,” HELB said through a statement.

Names of defaulters accompanied by their faces will be published after the expiry of 30 days from the date of the notice and legal action may hence be taken against each defaulter.

“Beneficiaries who are not servicing their loans are therefore advised as to get in touch with HELB for particulars of their loan accounts,” HELB noted saying that any other inquiry on loan status could be confirmed via the loanee portal on their website.

HELB has acknowledged that it has 85,000 loan defaulters who have accumulated 52.1 billion shillings that would help in facilitating the current needy students.

A total of 61,038 loanees were holding 6.1 billion shillings as of June 2019 as compared to 61,700 loanees holding 6.55 billion shillings at the end of June 2018 while 215,778 loanees have cleared their loans by financing HELB with 21.5 billion shillings.

In a desperate attempt to recover the loaned monies, HELB has revealed that there are at least 85,000 defaulters who are not even making any attempt to service their loans.

The HELB loan defaulted has since accumulated to 50 billion shillings since 1975. Those who benefited from the monies and have not made any attempt to repay will have the honor of appearing in daily newspapers with their photos included.

The publishing of names and photos of HELB loan defaulters will come as the body seeks to pursue legal action upon the 30-day deadline after the publishing which will be in accordance with the HELB Act.
