Africa’s COVID-19 Cases Exceed 1 million As South Africa Leads

Africa’s confirmed cases of COVID-19 have surpassed 1 million, According to a Reuters tally following figures released on Thursday.

According to data compiled by Reuters, Africa as a whole continent has so far recorded 1,003,056 cases, of which 21,983 have died and 676,395 recovered as of Thursday.

According to Africa Centers for Disease Control, five countries account for 75 percent of all cases in Africa, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, and Algeria.

The data shows that South Africa is the leading recording country in the continent with over 538,184 cases since its first case on March 5, according to its health ministry said on Thursday

South Africa’s COVID-19 cases have surpassed half a Million and the country is still the world’s fifth worst-hit nation and makes up more than half of sub-Saharan Africa’s case.

According to stats, In South Africa, a study showed some 17,000 deaths above the normal rate, or a 60% excess, between early May and mid-July, suggesting more people are dying of COVID-19 than official figures reflect.

Africa’s health systems are the most poorly funded and thinly staffed in the world, and already more than 2,000 health workers have been infected by the virus, according to the WHO.

Top 5 African countries With Highest COVID-19 Case

According to the World Health Organization, Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa account for about 75% of COVID-19 cases. South Africa alone accounts for half of the continent’s total cases.

South Africa

The country has the most reported Coronavirus cases totaling to 538,184, with deaths numbering 9,604 and 387,316 recoveries.

Egypt

The country has recorded over 95,006 Coronavirus Cases 4,951  Deaths and 48,898 recoveries according to Africa Centers for Disease Control

Nigeria

According to Africa Centers for Disease Control, Nigeria has a total of 45,244 Coronavirus cases, 930 deaths, and 32,430 recoveries.

Ghana

The country has so far recorded 39,642 Coronavirus cases, 199 deaths as 36,384 people have recovered from the virus according to Africa Centers for Disease Control.

Algeria

Algeria has recorded a total of 33,626 Coronavirus cases according to Africa Centers for Disease Control, 1,273 deaths, and 23,238 recoveries.
