Nairobi City County Set To Hire 520 ECDE Teachers

Anne Kananu, Nairobi Deputy Governor has announced that the county was in the process of hiring 520 teachers. The Nairobi Deputy Governor noted the teachers would be posted to various centers around the city during the launch of the Free Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).

She revealed that the county was looking to ensure a continual replacement for those who leave the service through natural attrition. The county had set aside 116 million shillings to ensure free ECDE education for all pupils in public institutions.

80 million shillings from the kitty are expected to benefit over 30,000 pupils enrolled in 232 ECDE centers across the City. Each child will receive 3,200 shillings and those with special needs 3,300 shillings.

Ann Kanamu said that during that period they have witnessed steady growth in enrollment from 13000 to over 25000. The goal is to double the number of children enrolled in ECDEs in Nairobi to 50,000 by 2022. She added that her administration will continue investment in ECDEs

The rest of the balance, she revealed, would be used to build new classrooms as well as more schools in order to reach out to as many children as possible.

Nairobi Deputy Governor said that the launch of the Free ECDE Fund Program could not be more timely especially after the unprecedented closure of schools and subsequent re-opening with comprehensive measures to contain the Covi-19 Pandemic.

She added that these funds will go a long way in improving the physical facilities of our schools hence ensuring access and quality of education in our public ECDEs.

Last week, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced a plan to employ 37,000 teachers in the next financial year. The teachers will help with the double transition in secondary schools.

Of the 37,000 teachers, according to a report, 25,000 will be employed on a permanent basis, while 12,000 will be on internship.

The move is aimed at managing the double transition to secondary schools, according to a budget policy statement presented to the National Assembly’s Committee on Education.
