Amu Power to Improve the Livelihoods of the People of Lamu

Sufficient production and supply of energy is key to economic development in any given area. All nations rely on energy to thrive and enrich the livelihoods of its people. Amu Power Company is going to be part of the success story in Kenya’s Coast and ultimately in Kenya’s story as well.

With the construction of Amu Power Plant, are the lives of the people within Lamu County going to change? The answer is yes. Their lives are going to change. This is because Amu Power coal fired power plant is going to provide direct benefits to Lamu County as well as to the whole nation.

Through the Ministry of Energy, about one thousand men and women will be recruited for training for a period of six months in the National Youth Service to acquire skills needed for various construction processes. This one thousands young men and women will then come back equipped with the knowledge and skills to change their lives, that of their families, that of their county and the nation at large.

Amu Power Company desolation plant will also produce fresh water that will be shared with the host community for human consumption.

It should be noted that the activities of Amu Power Company are guided by respect for priorities, culture, heritage, values as well as a way of life of the communities the company works with.

After its completion, Amu Power Company will create about 3000 jobs. This will be during the Amu Power coal fired power plant peak construction phase generation. Think of how many families will be supported by 3000 jobs. Think of how the economy will change with the creation of such opportunities.

Fishermen in Lamu County will benefit a lot. This is because Amu Power Company will construct a cold storage for fishermen at Makowe in Lamu County. The company will also set up a large scale water desolation plant in Lamu County that will provide water to the community.
