Lower Back Pains: When to Consider Surgery and Alternative Treatment Methods

A significant number of people often suffer from local soreness, have severe muscle spasms, experience pain that hardly reaches below the knee, have difficulty in moving or standing for long as well as feeling achy and dull pain among other problems. These are the symptoms of lower back pains. It is a condition that is caused by straining of muscles, injuries, degenerative and herniated discs, disc tear, spinal stenosis and scoliosis.

While many of the victims will consider surgery for treatment, sometimes it is not necessarily at all. The treatment to be considered for this condition solely depends on the history of the patient, the type and the intensity of the pain itself. Most of these pains subside after six weeks and in cases where the pain worsens and persists, a complete diagnosis and procedures for surgery are recommended.

This comes only after all treatment plans and physical exercises for back pain have been tried. Having a rest from the normal activities, use of heat and ice packs for inflammations and exercises for the lower back pains are some of the solutions for those suffering from this condition. There are also many over-the-counter medications which can use for inflammations and pain.

If a patient’s health fails to improve even after these methods are tried but spinal surgery needs be avoided, non-surgical treatments is also another option . There are psychiatrists who specialize in the treatment of skeletal and muscular disorders. They work together with spine surgeons and have enough training on techniques of diagnosis and doing injections.

Sometimes the pains gets worse and prevents one from doing every day activities like walking, running, driving among others. This is usually as a result of numbness or sciatica (tingling through your buttocks and down the back of the leg and the front thigh). In such an extreme case, surgery would be advisable.

There are also other cases that will render surgery inevitable. A fracture in one’s spine resulting from an injury, spinal infection like vertebral osteomyelitis, a tumor in your spine and spinal stenosis are also some of the special cases that require surgery. These problems cause severe pain and without surgery to correct them, a patient may suffer a lot.

Some bones in the human body can overgrow resulting to a condition referred to as osteoarthritis. This makes the bones excess which, therefore, narrows the amount of space in the spine and makes it difficult for nerves to pass through. The resulting consequence is a severe back pain and can only be corrected through surgery.

There is also the loss of control of the bowel or bladder, loss of feeling and weakness in the backs and lower limbs that get bad over time and problems that makes your spine very unstable. These also require surgery. They are caused by back pains as well.

Surgery for back pains depends, therefore, on the severity of the pain and it should be one that doesn’t have side effects after the surgical procedure is complete.

Alternative treatment methods

While many patients suffering from this condition mainly prefer treatment by surgery, there are other ways to ensure that they heal on their own.

The cause of the discomfort determines if it will go away on its own or if medical attention is required for treatment. Pain that results from herniated discs, spinal stenosis scoliosis among other severe causes may require surgery. Physical exercise, therapy and rest have been known to be alternative solutions.

Counselling is one way of dealing with back pains without undergoing surgery or other medical procedures. Patients are taught on ways of ensuring that it does not recur. It is independent of drug use or other medical treatments.

Enough sleep is very important in a person’s life. As many medical conditions have it, many people suffer from insomnia as a result of pain and among these are patients with severe back problems. On the contrary, lack of enough sleep only worsens the discomfort and it is therefore, recommended that one should have enough sleep to treat both insomnia and the pains.

Back exercising done repeatedly at an interval of 20 to 30 minutes daily is also another option of dealing with this condition. This is because the muscles in our backs serve to support the lower vertebral bones. These muscles should be given a good work out daily to reduce chances of developing the same problem again.

Many people develop back pains as a result of sitting or standing in one place for many hours. Apart from this, bad sitting positions is another known cause. In such a case, a person is advised to sit correctly and in an upright manner to ensure that blood flows and circulates easily.

Even though many people do not emphasize on having a massage, it is a very crucial form of therapy that eases muscles in our bodies. Having a massage occasionally makes us less susceptible to muscle strain. It makes us more active and resistant to the pain for up to a period of more than six months. Massage is voted the best treatment for people who have back problems that come and go.

Use of heat is also another alternative. The temperature technique can be applied where one can use warm towels or use ice packs for inflammations. Use of ice reduces swellings as heat hinders the pain reception by the brain and ensuring continuous blood flow in the veins. This technique has been overlooked more often but it works just fine in treating lower back pains.

Other alternative methods of dealing with back pain includes engaging your brain, stretching of hamstrings and yoga exercises. This way, a person stands a better chance of letting lower back pains heal on their own.
