Security Council Backs António Guterres to Be Next U.N. Secretary General

The United Nations Security Council reached a surprisingly swift consensus Wednesday on its choice for the next secretary general of the United Nations: António Guterres, a former prime minister of Portugal.

Mr. Guterres, 67, who ran the United Nations refugee agency for 10 years,had been the clear front-runner for the last several months. That a deeply divided Security Council rallied around him was a clear signal that Russia and the West saw him as someone they could work with.

African countries are facing the world’s worst teacher shortage

African countries face a particularly difficult path to educate their fast-growing millions of children because of a chronic teacher shortage across the continent, says a new report.

As part of its commemoration of World Teacher Day (Oct. 5), UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS) has released its first ever estimates of teacher shortages across the world. The estimates paint a particularly grim picture for Africa as the continent has the world’s greatest teacher shortage.
