Transparency International’s corruption index placed the country 145th out of 176 countries with a score of 26.

Kenya dropped 6 places in the index from 139 in 2015 to 145 in 2016 with 26 points behind Rwanda (54) and Tanzania (32) in the East Africa Community.

Corruption Perception

The report cites South Africa, Nigeria, Tanzania and Kenya as countries that have failed to improve their scores on the index.

” Kenya – despite the adoption of a few anti-corruption measures including passing a law on the right to information – has a long way to go. President Uhuru expressed frustration that all his anti-corruption efforts were not yielding much. He may need new strategies as Kenyan citizens go to the polls in 2017.,” read the report.

To mitigate this, the report recommends that African leaders that come to office on an “anti-corruption ticket” will need to live up to their pledges to deliver corruption-free services to their citizens.

“They must implement their commitments to the principles of governance, democracy and human rights.”

The CPI 2016 scores 176 countries on their perceived level of public sector corruption.

According to the report, “Over two-thirds of the 176 countries and territories in this year’s index fall below the midpoint of our scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). The global average score is a paltry 43, indicating endemic corruption in a country’s public sector. “

“This year’s results highlight the connection between corruption and inequality, which feed off each other to create a vicious circle between corruption, unequal distribution of power in society, and unequal distribution of wealth,” the report states.

Globally, Denmark and New Zealand were found to be the least corrupt countries with scores of 90 while Somalia and South Sudan were the most corrupt.
