Ongoing rains push Tomato Price higher by 5pc in Eldoret

Across major markets in Kenya, there has been a 5 percent rise in tomato prices attributed to the ongoing heavy rains in the country.

A 64-kilogram bag of tomatoes has gone up by 500 shillings in Eldoret currently retailing at 10,500 shillings compared to last week when it was 10,000 shillings.

This is the highest market price while the lowest stands at 4,000 shillings in Busia and Kitui respectively.

The market prices for a 50-kilogram bag of Sukumawiki in selected towns is as follows:  1,500 shillings in Mombasa and Kisumu respectively, 1,250 shillings in Nairobi, 1,000 shillings in Eldoret, 900 shillings in Kitale, 6,00 shillings in Nakuru, and 300 shillings in Kisii and Kitui respectively.

Dry and Spring Onions are also available in the market. A 142 kilogram of Spring Onions is being sold at 3,500 shillings in Mombasa while the same quantity is going at a market price of 1,000 shillings in Nakuru.

On the fruit market, a 93-kilogram bag of Oranges is retailing as follows: 5,000 shillings in Kisii and Kitui respectively, 4,800 shillings in Nakuru, 4,200 shillings in Mombasa and Kitale, 3,800 shillings in Nairobi, 3,400 shillings in Eldoret and 3,000 shillings in Kisumu.

A 54 kilogram of Pawpaw is retailing with the following prices: 4,000 shillings in Nakuru, 3,300 shillings in Kitale, 2,430 shillings in Eldoret, 2,400 shillings in Nairobi, 1,800 shillings in Mombasa, 1,000 shillings in Kisumu and 7,00 shillings in Kisii and Kitui respectively.
