The Best Day to Travel Back to Nairobi From Upcountry

BY Juma · December 27, 2017 06:12 am

Few days to 25th of December 2017, thousands of Kenyans were left stranded and frustrated at various bus stations in the country as they jostled for the few available PSVs to join their families upcountry for Christmas celebrations.

Matatu owners took the high demand to exploit the frustrated passengers by raising the fare by more than 250 percent.

The fare from Nairobi to Kakamega, for instance, increased from between 800 and 1,000 shillings to between 2,000 and 3,000 shillings.

It is estimated that more than 100,000 Kenyans from Nairobi alone traveled upcountry for Christmas celebrations.

Now everyone appears to be in the villages eating the life with a big spoon but come January, there is another crisis in making; traveling back to Nairobi.

Thousands of Kenyans will be traveling back to the big city come January. Bus fares will skyrocket even further and many people will be left stranded and calling for “serikali saidia.”

What is that best day and time that you need to travel back to Nairobi from upcountry to avoid all the frustrations?

Well, having studies the traveling habits and how Kenyan matatu operators behave, the best time to travel back to Nairobi will be 30th, 31st of December or 1st of January.

During these three days, few people will be traveling, bus fares may be relatively lower than they are at the moment and vehicles will be available.

Traveling between 2nd and 8th of January is a bad idea. Do not even think about it. Remember children are also going back to school on 3rd of January and traveling will be just as hard as trying to milk a male elephant.

If you are planning to be in Nairobi early, it is time you started saying goodbye to your village folks and started planning your journey back because I can assure you the bus fare will even be five times more than they are at the moment.
