Kenyans to Pay Ksh 200 for a 2-Kg Maize Flour By March

Kenyans will have to pay up to more than 200 shillings per 2-kilogram packet of maize flour according to millers further putting more burden to already economically suffocating Kenyans.

Most millers have dismissed the directive by the government that the price should not go beyond 120 shillings.

They say that after the termination of the subsidized maize to millers by the Ministry of Agriculture, market forces have pushed up the maize prices pushing the cost of production up.

Some millers have said that Kenyans will have no otherwise but to part with as much as 250 shillings per 2-kilogram packet if they want to have a bite of the favorite ugali.

Currently, the price of a 2-kilogram maize flour is retailing between 110 and 125 shillings with some brands at 150 shillings.

Early last year, the government came to rescue the consumer through subsidized maize flour that was going at 90 shillings per 2-kilogram. The flour had hit a record high of 150 shillings leading to what came to be known as the unga revolution.

Tough Times Ahead

Kenyans are facing tough times ahead with skyrocketing prices of basic commodities including fuel. Mid-January, the Energy Regulatory Commission increased the price of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene, a move that is like to trickle pressure down on Kenyans.

At the moment, more than 3.5 million Kenyans are on the brink of starvation due to a prolonged drought that hit the country the better part of 2017. Although the government has promised to make lives of Kenyans affordable, most Kenyans feel very little effort is being put in by those concerned.

The Shilling

The Kenyan shilling which was on the receiving end for the better part of 2017 due to the long electioneering period has kicked off strongly in 2018 but analysts warn that it is only a matter of time before it worsens.
