Hunger Ahead: The Armyworms are back

Kenyans are looking into a possible hunger towards the end of 2018 following the return of the vicious armyworms.

The armyworms that matched through more than 20 counties in 2017, devouring thousands of acres of maize, are now back and in more numbers than before.

In 2017, Kenya’s maize harvest dropped by a quarter due to armyworm attack and after the government failed to contain them.

As the planting season slowly comes to an end in various counties, it has emerged that armyworms have already started destroying germinating crops in more than 10 counties.

Members of Parliament now want the government to set aside one billion shillings to fight the armyworms.

Farmers have been left a worried lot because the said armyworms are resistant to common pesticides.

Most farmers have been left to improvise their own methods such as the use of detergents and ash. Some are even using pepper, hurting the crops in the process.

Analysts now say if the government will not move with speed, the country might lose more than half of its maize produce.

The attack from armyworms comes even as the government through the National Cereals Board suspended the process of buying maize from farmers due to lack of funds.

Farmers are yet to be paid more than four billion shillings of the maize they submitted to the board.
